Machine guns, drugs seized in raid at Tarrant home; 5 men charged

A raid at a Jefferson County home led to the arrests of five people and the seizure of multiple guns.

The arrests took place Aug 29 during a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office narcotics and violent crime suppression detail in Tarrant, authorities said Tuesday.

The five suspects were arrested at a home in the 2400 block of White Avenue in the Brummitt Heights neighborhood.

Investigators confiscated four Glock pistols that had been converted to fully automatic machine guns, two AR-style rifles converted to be fully automatic machine guns, a shotgun and two additional rifles.

They also seized digital scales, baggies, 257 grams of marijuana and a white powdery substance.

Those charged are:

– Odyssey Davon Amari Smith, 24, of Birmingham, altering ID on a firearm, first-degree possession of marijuana, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. He is in the Jefferson County Jail.

– Tobby Ornell Smith, 18, of Birmingham, altering ID on a firearm and first-degree possession of marijuana. He has been released on bond.

– Donta Lamar Mitchell, 18, of Birmingham, altering ID on a firearm and first-degree possession of marijuana. He is out of jail on bond.

– Roderick Lavelle Thompson, 23, of Birmingham, altering ID on a firearm and first-degree possession of marijuana. He has been released on bond.

– J’marcus Maurice Carey, 18, of Tarrant, altering ID on a firearm, first-degree possession of marijuana, and attempting to elude. He is out on bond.

“This is another example as to why we want our citizens to continue to let us know about suspicious activity.  No one knows more about what is occurring in their neighborhood than the people who live there,’’ Sheriff Mark Pettway said in a press release. “Several fully automatic weapons as well as other weapons and drugs have been taken off the streets of Jefferson County.  My number one priority is to keep our citizens safe.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-731-2838 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
