Man pleads guilty, is sentenced in Boardman rape case

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Boardman man who pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of rape was sentenced to three and four and a half years in prison.

The sentence that John D. Johnson, 36, received from Judge Maureen Sweeney in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court was recommended by prosecutors and defense attorneys in exchange for his plea.

Prosecutors also agreed to drop another rape charge and a gun case in exchange for the plea.

Johnson was indicted in March by a grand jury for the rape of a woman after a search warrant was served Jan. 4 at a home in the 100 block of Shields Road as police were investigating a claim that Johnson raped a woman New Year’s Day.

The victim told Judge Sweeney she still remembers how afraid she was when she was surrounded by doctors and nurses as she was being for injuries she received from Johnson.

“You changed my life forever,” she told Johnson.

The victim could not work for six weeks while she recovered from her injuries and said “I lost everything.”

Johnson did not speak to the court except to apologize.

He will receive credit for 247 days he has been in the Mahoning County Jail awaiting the outcome of his case.
