Man shot to death at Fairfield hotel; suspect in custody after standoff

A man was killed, and another is in custody following a shooting and standoff in Fairfield.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday to Budgetel Inns & Suites on Kelco Place on a report of a person shot.

A 35-year-old man was dead at the scene.

Deputies arrived and made contact with the suspect who was holed up in one of the rooms, said sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby. The alleged shooter surrendered a short time later without further incident.

Irby did not release any details.

The victim is Fairfield’s fourth homicide this year and the second in less than a week. A 17-year-old boy was killed in a Monday shooting in the city.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 161 homicides in 2024, including the four in Fairfield.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
