Mater Dei won the Durango Fall Classic girls volleyball tournament’s Championship Division title with a 2-1 victory over Marymount of Los Angeles in the finals Saturday in Las Vegas.
The Monarchs beat Marymount 25-18, 24-26, 28-26.
Huntington Beach was the champion of the tournament’s Classic Division.
The tournament included many of the nation’s top teams. Mater Dei beat Prestonwood Christian of Texas, the No. 1 team in MaxPreps’ national rankings, in the Durango semifinals Saturday.
Mater Dei sophomore outside hitter Westley Matavao was named tournament MVP. Matavao became eligible this week upon the conclusion of the sit-out period required for transfers who do not make the change of residence that grant immediate eligibility. She transferred to Mater Dei from Orange Lutheran where she was the only non-senior to make last season’s All-Orange County first team.
Monarchs junior outside hitters Layli Ostovar and Presley Kiffin and junior setter Samantha Capinpin were selected to the all-tournament team.
