In a recent chinwag with Collider, Matt Reeves took us on a deep dive into his master plan for The Batman and its follow-ups, proving that while Gotham might be in turmoil, his vision is as steady as a bat in a belfry.
When Bruce Wayne first appeared in The Batman, it wasn’t just a one-off adventure; Reeves had a bigger plan all along. The director, 57, confirmed that the film was merely a stepping stone in a grand trilogy that’s still very much on the table. “Yes, that is still the plan,” he admitted, leaving no room for doubt.
I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.
But here’s the kicker: while the grand plan remains intact, Reeves has had to make a few adjustments along the way. The success of The Batman set the stage for some creative recalibrations, including the spin-off series The Penguin. The director elaborated:
Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin, that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power.
As for how the Penguin’s story fits into the larger scheme, Reeves stated:
I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.
This allows us to see Penguin’s rise in more detail without hitting the brakes on the main trilogy.

We’re actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the broad plan. And then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We’re just getting together to talk about all of that.
While the exact details remain under wraps, the Cloverfield director has a clear vision for the future, as he elaborated in another conversation with Collider:
My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story.
So, Reeves is determined to keep Batman the star of his show, ensuring that he’s not relegated to the shadows behind a parade of villains.
