Florida State’s nightmare 2024 season continued on Saturday with a 20-12 loss to Memphis at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
The Seminoles (0-3) gained just 238 yards of total offense and turned the ball over three times. Florida State — which went 13-1 last season and was ranked No. 10 nationally in the preseason — rushed for only 37 yards and went 2-for-12 on third down.
Seth Henigan passed for 272 yards and two touchdowns for Memphis, which improved to 3-0. Caden Costa added two field goals as the Tigers built a 20-3 lead in the third quarter.
Florida State got a Roydell Williams touchdown run and a Ryan Fitzgerald field goal to pull within one score, and got the ball back in the final two minutes to try for a game-tying touchdown. However, DJ Uiagalelei’s last-second pass was batted down near the end zone.
Uiagalelei, the former Clemson and Oregon State quarterback in his first season at FSU, went 16-for-30 for 201 yards with an interception. Williams fumbled the ball away in the first quarter, while the Seminoles muffed a punt in the second.
In addition to the three takeaways, Memphis’ defense sacked Uiagalelei three times and had 12 tackles for loss. The Tigers’ offense went 7-for-17 on third down and held the ball for more than 36 minutes of clock time.
Florida State tries to finally get in the win column at home next Saturday vs. California.
