Menchville and Bethel football game postponed after student fatally shot on Tuesday

Menchville and Bethel football game postponed after student fatally shot on Tuesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A football game between Menchville and Bethel high schools has been postponed after a Menchville student was killed in a shooting at a school bus stop earlier this week.

Menchville was set to play Bethel at 7 p.m. Thursday at Darling Stadium in Hampton. 10 On Your Side confirmed the game has been postponed. A new date has not been set.

The 15-year-old victim was fatally shot Tuesday morning in the 1200 block of 16th Street in the city’s East End. He later died at the hospital.

No suspect has been identified in the case at this time, but Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew says the victim was likely targeted.

“This isn’t a random act, I don’t believe. (It was) some type of situation between an individual and maybe one other, we just got to sift through that.”
