Mission man accused of killing uncle over roosters indicted

A Mission man who allegedly shot and killed his uncle following an argument over the ownership of roosters has been indicted.

Aaron Madrid Cervantes, 21, was charged with capital murder after he allegedly shot his uncle, 54-year-old Fernando Madrid in rural Mission.

The indictment, however, charges him with murder, not capital murder.

At about 3:53 a.m. on May 30, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 5700 block of Doffing Road, according to the initial news release.

Once they arrived, they detained two men who were outside the residence.

Family members told the deputies that the man who was shot, Madrid, was inside a restroom.

Investigators identified the shooting suspect as Madrid’s nephew.

Witnesses told investigators that Cervantes and another family member arrived at the residence to take roosters that Cervantes claimed belonged to him.

“Cervantes began to remove the roosters from the property, when he was confronted by his uncle,” the release stated. “Cervantes and his uncle got into an argument over ownership of the roosters at which time Cervantes shot his uncle with a handgun.”

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, court records show.

Cervantes remains jailed at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
