Shohei Ohtani’s quest for the Triple Crown came down to the wire, but ultimately, it was San Diego Padres slugger Luis Arraez who all but clinched the National League batting title on Sunday.
Arraez finishes the season with a .314 average in his third-consecutive year achieving the honour. He also recorded his 200th hit in the Padres’ loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, marking the second-consecutive year he’s reached that mark.
While there is still a small chance some of the National League leaderboards are thrown in flux by Monday’s doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge and some of MLB’s other brightest stars have etched their name in baseball history as league leaders.
Detroit Tigers starter Tarik Skubal is the first hurler to win a pitching Triple Crown since Shane Bieber did so in 2020, and the first to do it in a full season since both Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw paced their respective leagues in 2011.
Skubal led the American League with 18 wins, a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts while helping the Tigers end a decade-long post-season drought.
He might not be the only southpaw taking home a Triple Crown this season, however, as Atlanta Braves starter Chris Sale currently leads the senior circuit in all three categories. He is expected to pitch in Game 2 of the doubleheader if the Braves drop the first contest to the Mets, where he will try and maintain his ERA lead over Philadelphia Phillies righty Zack Wheeler.
