The killer — said to have mental health problems — went berserk with the 18in blade at East Street Market, Walworth, South London.

One man suffered fatal wounds and cried as he lay dying: “I’m gone, it’s the end of my life.”

Another man and a woman suffered stab injuries before a hero stallholder fought off the attacker with a metal bar.

Police arrived and arrested a man in his 60s on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

A police cordon is still in place at the scene with abandoned market stalls remaining pitched up from Sunday.

Trampled fruit litters the sealed off section of the quiet street.

While the market remains empty, many shops on the side of the street opened as normal today.

Sanjay, 57, who owns a store on Walworth Road, described how much quieter the street felt today as a result of the stabbing.

He told The Sun: “It’s quieter because people are in shock. Because this place is not like that.”

He also said how “sad” it was that the victim had tragically died.

He added that some of his employees were concerned to come to work today due to fears of a repeat incident.

Renato Nunes, 34, who also works on Walworth Road, expressed his concern about what he feels is “worsening” safety in the area.

He spoke about other incidents in recent days and that “insecurity” is on the rise.

The worker said people are “afraid” to walk out with even their phones, with rampant thieves patrolling the street.

He added: “It was quite a shock that someone died.”

The tech shop employee said the stabbing has made people “feel more insecure and unsafe”.

That sense of security people once had is “going down the drain”, he said.
