In the summer of 2022, Blankenberge, De Haan, Wenduine and Zuienkerke escaped a catastrophe. Someone had deliberately opened six locks, causing the seawater to flood the village centres at high tide. That ‘someone’ was probably ex-lock keeper SD (42), who wanted to take revenge for a family feud that got out of hand. A reconstruction of the sabotage, for which SD must answer in court on Thursday. “I was so passionate about the locks that I wanted to take another look.”
