Netflix’s $18 Million per Episode Budget For One Piece May Not be Enough as We Get a Sneak Peak into Season 2’s VFX

The second season of Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation has made some major revelations in the past few days. The series that is currently in production is gaining a lot of traction because of the casting announcements that are being made for major characters like Crocodile, Vivi, Nico Robin, Nefertari Cobra, etc.

However, the one character that One Piece fans have been desperately waiting for is the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates, Tony Tony Chopper. Casting an actor for Chopper’s role might be quite difficult as he is a reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi. Thus, the creators of the series will most likely take the VFX and editing route to create the character.

And that is exactly what has happened. A sneak peek into the table read for the second season of the series by Iñaki Godoy, who plays the role of Luffy, has provided fans with a glimpse of Chopper. As Chopper has a very significant role in the Alabasta saga, he was present at the table reading and it looks like Netflix might have done a good job with the character.

The First Look of Tony Tony Chopper

When the second season of One Piece live-action was introduced, fans instantly knew that the biggest turning point for the success of the series would be how they brought the character of Chopper to life. His traits presented in the manga make him a significantly difficult character to translate into real life.

However, during Netflix’s Geeked Week, where a lot of significant revelations were made about the upcoming season, the showrunners also decided to give a sneak peek into Chopper’s look.

By doing so, Netflix has confirmed that Chopper will be created through CGI and probably take a major chunk of the series’ budget.

The first glimpse of Chopper has given the hint that the series has taken the Detective Pikachu route, and thus, they would probably provide him with a voice actor. Nonetheless, the cute, furry, pink-hat reindeer looks ready for adventure, as he is soon going to join Luffy in his One Piece journey.

One Piece Live-Action Might Need a Lot More Money

Last year, when the hype of Netflix’s One Piece adaptation was at its peak, it was revealed that the series had a budget of around $18 million for each episode. This revelation made One Piece one of the most expensive series yet, as it far exceeded the budget of popular TV shows like Game of Thrones.

However, it looks like the second season might need even more money as recreating Chopper through VFX and CGI is going to be exorbitant. This is because Chopper had seven different transformations when he was first introduced in One Piece. All of these were possible because of his medicinal invention called Rumble Ball.

Thus, creating seven different Choppers would not be easy and certainly won’t be cheap. But by the looks of it, the showrunners of One Piece live-action are ready to face the challenges, and hopefully, the second season of the series will turn out even better than the first season.

One Piece live-action is available to watch on Netflix.
