(KTLA) — Some fans may have felt a great disturbance in the force this week.
A new “Star Wars” trilogy is in the works at Lucasfilm, as reported by Deadline and Variety on Thursday. The news comes almost five years after the last theatrical film release for the legendary sci-fi fantasy franchise.
Simon Kinberg will reportedly write and produce the three new films. He’s known for his work on 21st Century Fox’s “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” films, as well as directing 2022’s “The 355.”
He’s no stranger to “Star Wars,” having co-created the popular animated series “Star Wars: Rebels,” which ran for four seasons.
The premise of the new trilogy remains cloudy. Fleming said he heard the trilogy would continue “The Skywalker Saga” with Episodes 10, 11 and 12. “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019 was advertised as the finale of the saga that began with the first film in 1977.
Of least three other “Star Wars” films currently in development, one is confirmed to be starring Daisy Ridley, who will reprise her role as Rey from the sequel trilogy. It’s unclear if that project would be in any way connected to Kinberg’s trilogy.
Fleming acknowledged, however, that insiders disagreed with his assessment and claimed that the saga would be self-contained. Who’s right? Only time can tell, so like a great Jedi, it is time to be patient.
