New York man allegedly drove 110 mph to elude CT trooper

A New York man faces charges after state police say he drove more than 100 mph on Interstate 84 in an attempt to get away from a trooper who tried pulling him over for speeding.

The arrest came after a trooper conducting traffic enforcement on Tuesday just before 3:20 p.m. in Union spotted a white GMC SUV with a Pennsylvania license plate driving at what appeared to be a “high rate of speed” on I-84 West in the area of Exit 73, according to Connecticut State Police.

The trooper used a laser speed gun to clock the driver at 94 mph in a 65 mph zone, state police said. When the trooper caught up to the motorist and tried to conduct a stop, the driver accelerated to about 110 mph, according to state police.

The trooper did not pursue the driver out of safety concerns.

Troopers positioned up ahead in the area of Exit 69 in Willington were able to box the vehicle in before the driver was identified as 31-year-old Gagan Khandate of New York, according to state police. He was taken into custody and transported to Troop C in Tolland, where he was charged with reckless driving and disobeying the signal of an officer.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Khandate was released on $1,000 bond and is expected to face a judge in Rockville Superior Court on Sept. 24.
