The southbound 71 Freeway will be closed weeknights in Chino and Chino Hills, starting Monday, Sept. 16, and lasting nearly three weeks.
Crews are set to begin building support structures for the eastbound 91 to the northbound 71 connector as part of the Riverside County Transportation Commission’s 71/91 Interchange Project, a plan to improve traffic congestion between Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties, a news release states.
Last month, the 71 Freeway was also closed for a weekend to allow workers to complete paving of the newly constructed southbound lanes.
The new round of closures will take place Monday through Thursday nights, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning and on Friday nights from midnight to 6 a.m. Saturdays.
The southbound 71 Freeway will be shut from Butterfield Ranch Road/Euclid Avenue south to the 91 Freeway. The closures are scheduled to last until Friday, Oct. 4.
Also, the southbound 71 to the eastbound and westbound 91 connectors will be closed, a news release states.
The nighttime closures may also involve lane reductions on the eastbound and westbound 91 Freeway, commission officials said.
To avoid traffic delays, drivers are advised to avoid the southbound 71 and use the southbound 57 or southbound 15 to reach the 91 and other destinations to the south.
Transportation officials said that drivers traveling on the southbound 71 will be rerouted to the Butterfield Ranch Road /Euclid Ave off-ramp in Chino Hills.
Traffic will be detoured north along Euclid Avenue to the eastbound or westbound 60 Freeway, where drivers can travel to either the southbound 15 Freeway or the southbound 57.
The project is set to open in 2025, officials said.
