Nogales football’s turnovers and mistakes costly in loss to undefeated Los Amigos – Orange County Register

WEST COVINA — There are times when it’s hard to find the positives after a lopsided loss, but Nogales senior quarterback Tyler Lewis, who scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on the final play in a 42-14 loss to undefeated Los Amigos on Thursday night, said the Nobles just have to keep working and stay positive.

“The most disappointing thing about losing like that is we had a great week of practice, it just didn’t show up on the field,” said Lewis, who completed 6 of 17 passes for 72 yards and rushed for 63 yards and a TD.

“It is what it is, we got next week (against Los Osos) and we got to keep our heads up and give it our all.”

Los Amigos running back Isaac Galindo was the difference, rushing for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jayvin Lee needed only four passes to throw for 120 yards also ran in a score for the Lobos (4-0).

Nogales (2-2) didn’t help itself with two costly turnovers, and several catchable balls that receivers couldn’t come down with.

Nogales’ Noah Lopez had their only other score on a 25-yard run, and he managed to finish with 96 yards after a 50-yard run in the second half.

But the turnovers, dropped balls and missed tackles were something Nobles coach Matt Villasenor said has to improve if they want to make noise in the Montview League and reach the playoffs.

“They (Los Amigos) just beat the (crap) out of us tonight,” Villasenor said. “We have a lot of mistakes to clean up, offensively and defensively. If we want to get to the playoffs and make a run, we have to continue to get better. Next week doesn’t get any easier for us (against Los Osos). It’s going to be a good test and then we go into league play. But if we play like we did tonight, we’re not going to beat anybody.”

Nogales was moving on its opening drive when it fumbled the ball near the red zone.

Los Amigos would answer with a 25-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Then, after a bad punt gave the Lobos good field position, they cashed it in. Galindo scored on a 4-yard run to go up 10-0.

It started to unravel quickly for Nogales.

Lewis threw a strike that ricocheted off his receivers’ hands and straight to Lobos safety Chris Flores, who returned the interception 43 yards for a touchdown and 17-0 lead.

Nogales’ only highlight of the half was Lopez scored on a 25-yard reverse that trimmed the Lobos’ lead to 17-8 after making the 2-point conversion.

“We kind of stuttered, sputtered, and everything like that,” Villasenor said. “I thought we were still in the game, but the dominoes just fell after that.”

The Nobles couldn’t stop the Lobos’ big plays.

Lee threw a wobbly ball that receiver Amari’e Maddox came down with, spun away from defenders and went 82 yards for a score to push the Lobos’ lead to 24-8 with 10:16 left until half

Then Galindo went to work, scoring on 48- and 79-yard runs that extended their first-half lead to 38-8.

There was a scary moment toward the end of the half when Nogales’ Ojani Garcia appeared to injure his back on a tackle. Paramedics were summoned and Garcia was taken to a nearby hospital to be examined.

After the Lobos’ Raul Cruz scored on a 12-yard run to extend the lead to 44-8 early in the second half, there was a running clock the rest of the way.
