Online threat from the stands of a high school football game prompts large police response and evacuation

A student has been arrested after a threat to commit a shooting from the stands of a football game at Norwich Free Academy, officials said.

On Friday evening around 8:50 p.m., Norwich police said they received a phone call from the FBI involving an active threat at Norwich Free Academy. An FBI agent told police they discovered a SnapChat post of a picture from the stands of an active football game with a threat to commit a shooting. The information was received in the final two minutes of the game, police said.

Several officers who were already assigned to a security detail at the game were immediately advised of the threat, police said in a press release. Officers then initiated a large scale response and began to evacuate “several hundred” spectators from the sporting event.

Police said the suspect responsible for the threat has been identified and arrested. The identity of the suspect is being withheld because he is a juvenile who attends a Norwich public school, police said.

Norwich Superintendent of Schools Susan Lessard was notified and a decision was made to keep the student out of school pending a review by the Board of Education, according to officials.

Anyone with information regarding criminal activity in Norwich is urged to contact the Norwich Police Department at 860-886-5561. Tips can be left anonymously, police said.
