Only One Thing Saved Timothée Chalamet From Depths of Regret After Rejecting a Cameo in Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’

Timothée Chalamet is currently riding high on success with back-to-back successful projects. His last film Dune: Part Two secured the spot of the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2024. Sadly, the 28-year-old actor also had a chance to star in Greta Gerwig’s highly successful Barbie, but missed it due to scheduling conflicts.

Previously, Timothée Chalamet had worked with Greta Gerwig in 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women. While a cameo in Barbie would have attached the actor’s name to a billion-dollar blockbuster, he did not regret his decision after knowing that his close friend Saoirse Ronan also could not do the film.

Timothée Chalamet first met with Saoirse Ronan on the set of 2017’s Lady Bird where he played the role of her toxic boyfriend. Since then both have shared a wholesome friendship off-screen. They also reunited on-screen for two more projects, Little Women and The French Dispatch.

During a 2022 interview with People, Ronan confessed that she regretted not being able to be a part of Barbie for other commitments. Later in 2023, Greta Gerwig also clarified to Cinemablend that she was annoyed how Chalamet and the young actress failed to make cameos in Barbie.

Barbie, led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was one of the most anticipated releases of 2023. Despite facing a clash with the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, the film earned $1.4 Billion worldwide (via The Numbers). Naturally, it was a big miss for both Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan.

But during a chat with Josh Horowitz for MTV, the Wonka star admitted that he was thankful Ronan also rejected the cameo due to scheduling issues. The Paul Atreides star shares an incredible camaraderie with the Atonement actress and learning that she had also passed the role gave him some relief.

I think it was one of these rejected uh Ken or Barbies yeah um but I’m not sure you know and then when I saw Saoirse [Ronan], like there was one more scene of shooting Willy Wonka and she was shooting the Steve McQueen movie. I said did you shoot the Barbie. She said no. I thought ‘Thank God it’s not just me I would have been so jealous.’

Later, when Saoirse Ronan chatted with The Wrap, she teased the prospect of joining Greta Gerwig’s upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia film series. Ronan added that she and Gerwig share a very friendly bond. It will be interesting to see if she appears in the Netflix adaptation of the C.S. Lewis books.

Following Lady Bird, Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan have not only been a popular on-screen couple. Their countless interviews and red-carpet walks together also raised many headlines about one of the closest friendships in the industry.

Even though there is nothing romantic between the pair, their chemistry has garnered widespread attention. When the 30-year-old actress played a game of ‘Who’d You Rather’ during her visit to The Ellen Show, she chose Timothée Chalamet over many other stars including Harry Styles in the first few rounds.

Saoirse Ronan also revealed in an interview with the New York Times that she even has a nickname ‘Pony’ for the Call Me By Your Name actor. On the other hand, Chalamet also flaunted immense respect for her by claiming that he would act in any film directed by her without any questions.

The Lady Bird duo is also called the modern-day “Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet” as they remind us of the iconic Hollywood friendship that commenced on the set of Titanic. The fans would also love to watch the pair on-screen again.
