Parks and Recreation Remake Will Never Work Today, Just Ask Mike Schur Instead

In the ever-growing realm of reboots and remakes, it’s always tempting to imagine what modern-day versions of beloved shows would look like. While some fans have wanted shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation to be redone, it looks like not everyone feels the same way. In fact, most recently, the co-creator and writer of the 2009 sitcom, Mike Schur shared his thoughts on a potential reboot.

Fans of the Amy Poehler show may have been hoping to go around the block once more. However, Schur recently admitted that it was not on the cards for a few select reasons.

Mike Schur shuts down the idea of a Parks and Recreation remake

In 2009, Mike Schur gave the world the iconic sitcom, Parks and Recreation. While the show gathered a massive fanbase through its 7-season run, the co-creator doesn’t think it would work as well in this day and age. With the show’s sharp political commentary and witty humor, it quickly became a fan favorite. However, it might not go over so well today. In a recent conversation with the Television Academy, the television producer gave his two cents.

It’s very much of a time.

Schur stated, “I think if you made the show now, it wouldn’t make any sense. It would be like, ‘What are you talking about? This is not the way the world works anymore.’” After all, one of the key reasons the Poehler show struck a chord with audiences was its timely commentary on local government and community engagement. Now, it might not be as relevant as it was back in the late 2000s.

Although the storyline might not be as effective now, Schur believes that the sitcom will reign forever because of two key factors.

Mike Schur shares his thoughts on the legacy of Parks and Recreation

Ever since Parks and Recreation was released in 2009, the show had fans hooked. While some viewers believed that it was the plot and comedy that kept them interested, the co-creator of the series, Mike Schur doesn’t completely agree. During the same conversation with the Television Academy, the 48-year-old revealed what he thinks is the show’s legacy.

If it has any kind of lasting staying power, it’s because of the actors and the writing.

Schur explained, “The point all along was to create a bunch of characters and stories that had heart and warmth behind them. That’s ultimately what makes people stick with shows over a long period of time. Parks had a mission, and the mission was to make people feel good.” After all, the series had set out to be a spin-off of The Office, which did the same thing in a rather different way.

Fans may not be getting a Parks and Recreation reboot in the near or distant future. However, that has not changed the love they have had for the show. In fact, with people continuing to rewatch the Amy Poehler series, and the stars of the show pushing for a reboot, it could happen at some point. But it may not be what the fans have been expecting.
