HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin will step down from his role on Dec. 6, according to Governor Josh Shapiro’s office
Shapiro credited Mumin with helping get billions of dollars invested into public schools during his two years as secretary.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Education,” Secretary Mumin said in a statement. “I began my career as a teacher in a classroom, and those early experiences watching students get excited about learning inspired me to become a principal, a superintendent, and ultimately Secretary of Education, so I could continue to fight for those students to get more support and more opportunities. I’m so grateful to Governor Shapiro for this opportunity to lead the Pennsylvania Department of Education and help build a bright future for Pennsylvania’s students and educators.”
The state has made “historic” investments in public education during Mumin’s time, including over $1 billion given to schools from two state budgets. Free breakfast has also been given to millions of students, there also was more of an investment in students’ mental health.
Prior to serving as Secretary of Education, Mumin was a teacher, dean of students, principal, and central administrator for 25 years. He also served as the Superintendent of Schools at Lower Merion School District and he was the Superintendent of Reading School District.
Executive Deputy Secretary for the Department of Education Angela Fritter will serve as Interim Acting Secretary. She has over 25 years of experience working for the state government and she has served as Deputy Chief of Staff to former Governor Tom Wolf, Deputy Secretary in the Governor’s Office of Legislative Affairs, and Legislative Director at PDE, among other positions.
