Pirates' ace named National League rookie of the year

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WKBN) Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes was named National League Rookie of the Year on Monday night.

He won the award over San Diego outfielder Jackson Merrill and Milwaukee outfielder Jackson Chourio.

Skenes is the first pitcher in Pirates history to win the award. He is also the first rookie to win the award since outfielder Jason Bay won it in 2004.

Skenes is also a candidate for the National League Cy Young Award. That winner will be announced on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
