Since several decades the horror genre has enjoyed quite a big fan following and popularity with several movies hitting the big screens every now and then. But in this plethora of projects, only a few manage to leave an everlasting impression on the viewers. One such movie was Black Sheep released in 2006, directed by Jonathan King. It presented a very unique combination of horror and comedy with an out-of-the-box storyline.
The movie stars Nathan Meister and presents the plot of genetically modified sheep going on a bloody spree. As soon as it was released, it managed to win the audience over with its quirky horror. Amidst this, fans also wondered if the makers would bring out a sequel to it or not.
Now almost two decades later, King and Meister are all set to bring back the horror-comedy movie Black Sheep 2. In this article we will take a closer look at the plot as well as all we know about the upcoming project.
Jonathan King and Nathan Meister Are All Set to Collaborate Again for Black Sheep 2
Released in 2006, Black Sheep quickly became New Zealand’s most successful horror comedy movie. Though it presented a very bizarre storyline of genetically modified sheep going on a murderous rampage, it did manage to win fans over. Now, after 18 years, an announcement regarding its sequel has thrilled the viewers, who have been eagerly waiting for an update.
As reported by Deadline, the original creators and cast of the 2006 hit are all set to bring back the movie but with a new and darker twist. The original movie was directed by Jonathan King, and he’s returning to direct the sequel as well. He also co-wrote the screenplay of the project alongside Rosie Howells and Matthew Grainger.
This is obviously good news for the fans, as they can now expect the same elements that made the first movie a cult classic. To add to this, Nathan Meister will also return to his role of Henry Oldfield, a sheep-fearing character whose elder brother, with his rather twisted experiments, turns sheep into blood-hungry monsters.
In the original movie, the special effects were handled by the award-winning company Wētā Workshop, which also worked on projects like Avatar: The Way of Water, M3gan, Pearl, and The Lord of the Rings. Now the Workshop will work on the sequel as well.
The production of the sequel is said to begin in New Zealand in March or April 2025, and Umbrella Entertainment is said to look after the distribution of the movie in Australia and New Zealand. Interestingly, the studios are also planning to release the original movie with a new 4K restoration so that the fans can re-watch the same that too in high definition.
What Is the Plot of Black Sheep 2?
The original movie brought in a completely bonkers idea on the screen, that many could never have imagined. So, fans were overjoyed when the recent update came to light. Even though only a few details are available for the viewers at the moment, the ending of the original did give a hint on what to expect from the sequel.
In Black Sheep, the lead character, Henry with his efforts managed to stop the killer virus that was turning sheep into deadly monsters. And after finding out the cure of the virus he burned all the infected animals to end the horror of many. However, towards the end, viewers got a glimpse of the family dog that might have caught the virus.
This has left many wondering if the sequel would pick up from here and explore what happens if the dog spreads the virus. According to the synopsis released with the update, the plot states:
While the plot did not reveal a lot about the movie, it did give an idea that the audience should be prepared for more dark humor, and more scares.
Will Black Sheep 2 Manage to Capture the Same Magic as the Original?
Black Sheep created a lot of buzz when it was released in 2006, with its premise of a killer sheep. It also managed to attain critical acclaim and currently sits on Rotten Tomatoes with a 72% score. But while on one hand the critics loved the movie, the public on the other hand was divided, evident from its 53% Popcornmeter score.
Further, many complained that they were unable to understand the humor behind its over-the-top storyline. Others also called out its campy style, which was due to its low-budget production. It also didn’t make huge waves at the box office when it was released and earned almost $5 million worldwide. Although its theatrical release didn’t go as the makers had anticipated, it found its real footing through home video releases.
Further, word of mouth also played a huge role in its popularity with more and more people watching it. Over time, it managed to gather quite a huge following, eventually making it a cult classic. It was one of those movies which instantly didn’t manage to grab the attention of the viewers.
But over time, it gained a huge momentum with people actually appreciating its premise and storyline. The makers also brought in their A-game by bringing in WēTā Workshop for special effects, who in turn did an amazing job transforming innocent sheep into bloodthirsty monsters.
You can watch stream Black Sheep on Pluto TV as well as rent it on Apple TV.
