Popular CT grocery chain says it’s hiring across the state

ALDI has announced it will hire more than 13,000 store and warehouse associates nationwide “as it prepares for the upcoming holiday season and continues adding new stores” and that means jobs in Connecticut locations too.

Aldi has 32 stores in Connecticut across the state and at “a time when unemployment has increased, ALDI is growing its team of more than 49,000 employees and raising its national average hourly pay,” according to the company.

An Aldi spokesperson said there are currently job openings for over 125 part-time, full-time and seasonal workers in Connecticut. The would be in addition to the 1,354 ALDI employees throughout the state now, the spokesperson said.

“At a time when unemployment has ticked up to its highest levels since 2021 (citing Bureau of Labor Statistics July 2024), ALDI is growing its team of more than 46,000 ALDI employees as it seeks to support its ambitious growth plan.

“ALDI is hiring across its Store Associate and Warehouse Associate positions to ensure it has the right people in place to provide affordable, quality food to even more communities,” the spokesperson said.

Atty McGrath, president, ALDI, said in a statement that, “Whether it’s our in-store team filling shelves with fresh produce, warehouse staff managing logistics, or drivers delivering our trending ALDI Finds, our employees fuel the quicker, easier and more affordable shopping experience our shoppers know and love.”

“Our ability to attract and retain talent has always been key to our success, and we look forward to helping our new
team members grow in their careers,” McGrath said.

Aldi’s stores are in: Branford, Bristol, Canton, Danbury, Dayville, Derby, East Hartford, Enfield, Fairfield, Groton, Hamden, Lisbon, Meriden, Middletown, Milford, Monroe, New Britain, New Haven, New Milford, Newington, North Windham, Rocky Hill, South Windsor, Southington, Torrington, Vernon, Wallingford, Waterbury, Waterford, West Hartford and West Haven.

The West Haven location is about a block from a Walmart store.

A store also is planned for Plainville. The German-owned company signed a long-term lease in January to rent just over 22,000-square-feet of space inside Connecticut Commons Shopping Plaza at 282 New Britain Ave., according to the commercial realtor that finalized the transaction. The grocery store will fill the space left vacant by the former arts and crafts store A.C. Moore after it closed in 2019.

The store is set to feature Aldi’s typical offerings including meat, dairy, dry goods, produce and frozen foods and to have a new storefront and sign.

That location will compete locally with Big Y World Class Market, which sits adjacent to the plaza across the street. The town’s other grocery store, Gnazzo’s, is family run and has been a staple in the town for decades.

The vacant space was originally slated to be a 40,000-square-foot Amazon Fresh grocery store, but those plans fell apart after the company pulled its permit application, according to the town. Another two proposed Amazon Fresh locations in Brookfield and Westport were also scrapped after Amazon withdrew its plans last minute. Even with Aldi filling part of the space, an additional 17,000-square-feet of space remains vacant, according to SITE Centers.

Once the only game in town, Stop & Shop’s dominance is under siege. CT is ‘hyper competitive market’

McGrath said, Aldi is “known for its commitment to competitive compensation,” and that “the new national average starting wages for open ALDI store and warehouse positions will be $18 and $23 per hour, respectively, based on market and position.”

Further, the company said, those working at a store “for more than 30 hours a week have access to healthcare
insurance, paid time off and more. In 2023, the retailer also introduced new perks in response to
employee feedback, including flexible scheduling and 100% paid parental and caregiver leave.”
