UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WTAJ) — According to attorneys involved in a class action lawsuit, Penn State University will be settling the suit, and a segment of former students may be entitled to funds.
Students who were enrolled in the Spring of 2020 are eligible for a partial refund as part of the settlement. The lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of students who abruptly transitioned to virtual learning, argues that they paid for services that were no longer available to them.
Penn State denies all allegations of wrongdoing but has agreed to pay $17,000,000 into a Settlement Fund.
If you were enrolled at Penn State, including all Pennsylvania campuses and branches, during the semester, and paid tuition and/or fees to attend at least one in-person class, then you are part of the proposed settlement. Those affected will not have to do anything and will automatically receive benefits.
Payment will be sent automatically by First-Class U.S. Mail to your last known permanent postal address on file with Penn State. Attorney’s added that it’s estimated that students will receive approximately $150 each.
The Court has preliminarily approved the proposed settlement, but the distribution of payments will occur only if the Court grants final approval. That hearing is scheduled for February 18, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.
