It’s been a turbulent period for the 61-year-old, who has plunged millions of his own cash into the club.

Yet he’s been left holding the fort after the departure of chief executive James Bisgrove to Saudi Arabia – with the club this week FAILING in their bid to recruit Jim Gillespie from St Mirren as his replacement.

And the club’s prospects have taken a dramatic hit after Ibrox upgrades overran this season due to a steel shipment problem – with the club crashing out of Champions League qualifying.

Now the Athletic say that senior club sources could neither confirm or deny claims that he has told bosses of his intention to walk away from the club – with no immediate plan in place for his successor.

Bennett joined the board back in March 2015 as Mike Ashley and his associates were ousted from the club.

Since then the Gers have won one Premiership title, one Scottish Cup, one League Cup and reached the 2022 Europa League final.

He was also responsible for sacking Michael Beale as manager after just over 10 months in charge – and bringing in Philippe Clement, then rewarding him with a new long-term contract.

More to follow.
