Rangers hero Ally McCoist sends personal message to ‘absolute legend of the SPFL’ after he joins exclusive goals club

RANGERS hero Ally McCoist has sent his congratulations to another epic Scottish goalscorer.

And now he’s being lined up for another special occasion in 2025.

McCoist hit the net 362 times in a 15-year Ibrox career and was one of just two stars to score 250 goals, or more, in the Scottish league system since WWII.

Until now.

Gordon Wallace had been the only other post-war player to reach the milestone with McCoist after a career spanning Dundee, Dundee United, Montrose and Raith Rovers.

He retired in 1980 – three years before Super Ally’ signed for Rangers and SEVEN before the third striker to complete the feat was even BORN.

But now Rory McAllister’s incredible hit-rate has been recognised by the SPFL and he makes up the hot-shot trio of the Scottish leagues.

The prolific marksman was the first to reach 100 goals in the SPFL since the new league set-up was formed in 2013.

And he scored his 250th Scottish league strike in Peterhead’s 4-0 win against Edinburgh City on August 31.

That took his Peterhead tally to 168 league goals for the Blue Toon – but adding in efforts with Montrose, Cove Rangers, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Brechin City – he reached the 250-mark.

And McCoist was delighted to see him joined at the top of the scoring tree.

Ally McCoist picks his best ever Rangers team as he tells those who missed out ‘I’ll probably change my mind tomorrow’

He said: “Rory, mate – what an achievement. Absolutely first class.

“250 league goals and an absolute legend of the SPFL. That I can say without fear of contradiction.

“The last decade or so you’ve been banging that ball in the back of the net. You’ve been an example to everyone.

“Best wishes – particularly from all those folk in Peterhead where you’re a legend.”

But McCoist tried to protect his own record too.

He added: “Keep it going, although I think you’ve got about 30 to go [to catch me] so don’t go crazy now.”

McCoist IS in McAllister’s sights though – for his record AND his testimonial year.

Hearing the video message the 37-year-old said: “That’s brilliant. My testimonial is next year, so I’m hoping I can get him to speak at that.”

Rory McAllister’s career in view

  • Aberdeen Youth Set-up: McAllister was initially part of Aberdeen’s youth set-up but never made a first-team appearance, only playing for the reserves on a few occasions.
  • Inverness Caledonian Thistle (2004-2009): McAllister resurrected his career at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, making over 50 appearances and scoring 5 goals. He made his league debut on 30 April 2005 against Kilmarnock and scored his first goal in a Scottish Cup tie against Ayr United on 7 January 2006.
  • Loan to Peterhead (2008): McAllister was loaned to Peterhead in January 2008, where he played 4 times and scored 1 goal in a 9–2 victory against Berwick Rangers.
  • Brechin City (2009-2011): After leaving Inverness, McAllister signed for Brechin City, scoring a total of 29 goals in his first full season. He scored four times in an away match against his old club Peterhead during the 2010-11 season.
  • PFA Scotland Second Division Player of the Year (2009-10 & 2010-11): McAllister was voted PFA Scotland Second Division Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons.
  • Interest from Multiple Clubs: His goal-scoring exploits at Brechin attracted interest from Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Peterhead, Charlton Athletic, Port Vale, and Sheffield United. He turned down a move to SPL club St Mirren on 16 June 2011.
  • Peterhead (2011-2020): McAllister joined Peterhead to be closer to Aberdeen for an apprenticeship in plumbing. He scored the winning goal against Rangers at Ibrox on 20 April 2013 and was awarded the SPFL Player of the Month for March 2014 after scoring eight goals in six games. He scored 192 goals in 350 appearances during his time at the club before leaving to join Cove Rangers.
  • Scottish League Two Title (2013-14): McAllister played a crucial role in Peterhead’s Scottish League Two title win, scoring the second goal in a 2–0 win against Clyde on 12 April 2014.
  • Five Goals in a Match: McAllister scored all five of his side’s goals in a 2015-16 Scottish Challenge Cup match against Falkirk on 18 August 2015, and again scored five goals in a 9-0 victory over amateurs Colville Park in the 2017-18 Scottish Cup.
  • First Player to Reach 100 SPFL Goals: After scoring against Albion Rovers in August 2018, McAllister became the first player to reach 100 goals since the SPFL began operation in 2013.

He went on: “I knew I was getting close, so it’s great to get there. My family will be really proud.

“As you get older it becomes more about the team than personal achievements, but it’s still really special to reach 250. I’d like to thank all my teammates over the years, who have played a huge part in me reaching this.

“I’ve always scored goals throughout my career, even in my youth days. I wasn’t as prolific when I played full-time, but the goals have flown since I started part-time with Brechin City back in the day.

“Hopefully I can now catch Ally. That would be unbelievable.”

“Becoming just the third post war player to score 250 goals in our top four leagues is a really special moment and one Rory should rightly be proud of.”
