The Romanian star remains frozen out under Philippe Clement with a year of his contract left, but he vowed he would continue to fight for his place this week after international duty.

But insider Giovanni Becali claims the reason clubs haven’t tried to sign Hagi is because Rangers want 3.5 million Euros [£2.95 million] for the national hero and they don’t get an opportunity to scout the player.

He said: “Ianis’ problem is that Rangers have set a clause for him, €3.5 million.

“If a club comes in for him and pays it, he can leave Rangers.

“But the problem is Rangers aren’t giving him the opportunity so no one can watch him.

“He’s not even getting to sit on the bench, never mind playing.”

Becali has links to the Hagi family however Ianis spoke out at the weekend to distance himself from previous statements and insisted he was NOT his agent.

Posting on Instagram while on international duty the Ibrox playmaker wrote: “He’s not my agent, I’ve been under contract with one football agency AC Talent for more than four years and they’re the only people who represent and talk on my behalf.”

The midfielder has played 99 times for Rangers on his current contract but Philippe Clement is adament he will not be part of his plans going forward.

Since his last appearance in a Gers first-team shirt – as a substitute against Morton in the Viaplay Cup on August 19 last season – he has played 15 times for Romania – sitting out just one international as an unused sub last season.

He returned to the club after spending the remainder of 2023-24 on loan at Alaves following a public fall-out with Michael Beale over game-time and the Romanian star now trains and plays with the Gers B-team.

He lost his squad number 7 to winger Oscar Cortes in the close season.

Former Romania World Cup star, Iosif Rotariu, has questioned Ibrox boss Clement’s decision not to use Hagi.

The ex-Steaua Bucharest and Galatasaray midfielder said: “I watched Ianis during the international games there. I have never watched a player in my life who could dribble equally as well with his right or left foot.
