RANGERS have been credited with a bold move to snap up a former Ajax and Inter Milan star under free agency.
The player in question was midfielder Davy Klaassen, the 31-year-old Dutch international who came through the ranks at Ajax and has also graced Everton, Werder Bremen and Inter Milan.
Persuading him to join Philippe Clement‘s Ibrox revolution would have been a massive coup for the troubled Gers.
But it was revealed yesterday that Klaassen is rejoining Ajax for a third spell at the Dutch champions instead on a one-year deal.
Italian football journalist Nicolo Schira wrote on X: “Behind the Scenes – Davy Klaassen has turned down Rangers FC and Royal Antwerp bids in the last few days to return to Ajax.”
Philippe Clement admitted earlier this month that he hadn’t ruled out the possibility of signing a free agent after the summer transfer window closed – with midfield a particular priority.

He said: “That’s still a possibility, yes.
“We talked about that in the club and that was the initial plan [to bring in a No.6 to replace John Lundstram].
“So we need to now find solutions within the squad to do that, in a different way to before.
“Connor Barron is filling that role.
“Dujon Sterling can fill that role. Nico Raskin can fill that role. But it’s in a different way to Lunny.
“We don’t need to play in the same way we did last season.

“And we’re going to find solutions for that.”
