Readers speak: The stupid economy?

Readers speak: The stupid economy?

The stupid economy?  People make the economy a primary issue in elections when in fact the power of politicians over the economy is limited.

Let’s be frank, capitalism is a necessary evil. It is not mandated in the Constitution, in fact the Constitution preamble talks about common defense and general welfare. Neither are sound capitalism principles. Can we limit spending by the government when at war?  Wars show we can’t. In depressions or recessions can we limit spending?  History shows we cannot and should not.

So why do we look to the government to “fix” the economy when the power is in our own hands.  If prices for non-essentials are too high, don’t buy them.  When it comes to essentials, there are more than enough programs to make sure everyone can get the bare essentials of life like food, clothing, shelter.  Yes sometimes charity has to step in too, but if the government goes too far the capitalistic instincts take over and complaints about taxes and government spending spring up.

Bottom line is look for politicians to do what they have the power to do and not what they don’t have the power to do.  Don’t complain when they do what they do have the power to do.  But do complain when our “free enterprise” system doesn’t work for the poor and average person. Then ask the government to act.

United Illuminating signals it’s seeking increase in CT electric rates. It wants $105M new revenue

Remember, neither the words “free enterprise” nor capitalism appear in our Constitution.  Common defense and general welfare do.
