Real Madrid transfer news: How would Spurs respond to Cristian Romero interest?

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly decide how they would respond to any interest from Real Madrid in defender Cristian Romero.

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly decide how they would handle any interest in Cristian Romero from Real Madrid.

Albeit just three points adrift of third place in the Premier League table, Spurs have put together a concerning run of form in the division.

As many as five defeats have been posted in 11 games, the latest coming at home to Ipswich Town by a 2-1 scoreline on Sunday afternoon.

That result came on the back of Micky van de Ven being unavailable through injury, replacement Radu Dragusin yet to impress during his time in English football.

However, Romero has been at the heart of the defence in each of those five losses, suggesting that his performances must improve if Ange Postecoglou‘s side are to challenge higher up the standings.

Nevertheless, the World Cup winner continues to be linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, potentially giving Spurs a decision to make both in the short and long term.

Would Spurs consider Romero sale?

Romero is approaching a stage in his contract where he will have two-and-a-half years remaining, and it is yet to be determined whether a renewal is realistic.

The 26-year-old will not be short of offers if his terms with the North Londoners continue to run down, whether that be from Real or other top European clubs.

According to Football Insider, though, Spurs have no plans to cash in on Romero at the midway point of the campaign.

Real are becoming in desperate need of reinforcement at the back with Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao having both been ruled out for the season, and David Alaba will not be rushed back after his own serious knee injury.

Regardless of whatever transfer fee may be offered, it is alleged that Spurs will target signing a new centre-back to complement their current options.

Spurs too reliant on Romero, van de Veen?

Romero may have won a World Cup with Argentina and is first choice in the world champions’ backline, but he has not consistently shown that level of form with Spurs.

Just nine clean sheets have been kept in 49 Premier League fixtures with Postecoglou in charge, Romero missing just five games during that time.

That said, it should be noted that Spurs conceded 12 goals without Romero in the side, albeit that only emphasising the lack of quality that is being produced by backup members of the squad.
