Red Sox’s Rafael Devers expected to be shut down for season with shoulder injury

Boston Red Sox superstar third baseman Rafael Devers is expected to be shut down for the remainder of the season, manager Alex Cora told reporters on Friday according to The Athletic‘s Jen McCaffrey.

Devers, 27, suited up Friday for Boston’s game against the Minnesota Twins but came out in the top of the 11th after going 1 for 4 with three strikeouts and a walk on the day. He was replaced by Vaughn Grissom.

According to Cora, Devers has been dealing with right shoulder pain and will be getting an MRI on Saturday. He added the third baseman re-injured something on a swing in the batting cage before the game.

Before Friday’s game, Devers had been held hitless in the team’s last three outings as Boston tried to claw its way back into the wild-card race. They now sit at 76-77 and four games back of the final wild-card spot. They have eight games to go.

Devers is putting up .273/.354/.518 batting splits this season with 28 home runs and 83 RBIs but is way down to .171/.274/.220 with one home run over the last 28 days.
