BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Boardman man is facing charges after the investigation of a crash over the weekend.
Around 3 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to the intersection of South and Moyer avenues for a crash report. Officers spotted a Chevrolet Silverado off the roadway that had struck a telephone pole. The driver, identified in a police report as 46-year-old Melvin McKee, was slumped over the steering wheel.
Police said McKee was unresponsive at first but woke up and seemed confused. Police noted in the police report that he smelled of alcohol and said he was driving home from work where he had a few drinks throughout the night.
According to the police report, McKee would continually drift in and out of consciousness while officers were speaking with him, and he was slurring his speech.
While officers were speaking with McKee, they noticed two bottles of prescription pills not prescribed to McKee in the driver’s side door pocket. When asked about the pills, McKee said he regularly picks them up for a friend, according to the report.
Police said McKee was having difficulty walking and refused a field sobriety test, so he was taken into custody.
The vehicle was searched before it was towed, and officers reported finding a loaded firearm inside, as well as an unloaded shotgun with shells around it. Police also reported finding a duffle bag with $1,001 in cash and a lockbox with $12,290 in cash.
Once at the police station, McKee refused a breath test, according to reports.
He is charged with possession of drugs, improper handling of a firearm in a vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, driving under the influence and failure to control.
He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Tuesday.
