The two-time Academy Awards winner and Hollywood A-lister, Robert De Niro has had quite an impactful journey. The actor gained fame with hit movies like The Godfather: Part II, Goodfellas, Meet the Parents, and many more.
However, unlike other celebrities De Niro was very vocal about one sensitive topic, politics. The legendary actor-producer has often spoken about his political views, particularly his disdain for one leader. The feud between the Casino lead and Donald Trump is long-standing. This election season the actor has been campaigning boldly for the opposition, referencing a past incident which was a blemish on the former president’s rep.
The bold pursuit for Political Freedom: No. 1 critic
Along with being one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro is also perhaps one of the biggest critics of the Republican candidate. The Goodfellas actor has been very public about his views on Donald Trump and his election campaign.
Naturally, the actor joined the ‘Paisans for Kamala’ online fundraiser hosted by Italian American Democrats. In addition to speaking up for his support of the Democratic candidate, De Niro also shed light on the opposition.
We just have to be on it all the time until the very end because they’re going to try everything when the election day comes. When will these things be final? What will they question? What will they play games about?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Taxi Driver actor warned people to not get too excited. He mentioned being vigilant and ready for any counterattacks by the opponent on election day.
I think people will think twice about doing something about that no matter what Trump says, because…people pay a price, and is it worth it for them? Especially following someone like him? You know, it’s just insane.
Referring to the horrific incident of 6 January 2021, the actor reminded the public about that outrage. He hoped Kamala Harris‘s campaign would win and another incident like that won’t ever be repeated. De Niro also added a quip about Trump supporters and how it didn’t make sense to vote for him.
A blast to the past: The incident which divided American politics
The incident that the actor quoted in his statement warning the public against Trump’s campaign was what happened on 6 January 2021. According to BBC on that day a bunch of rioters stormed in the US Capitol.
These people were allegedly Trump supporters who were angered after he lost the 2020 elections. The agenda behind the outrage was to supposedly put a stop to the certification of Joe Biden‘s election.
Unfortunately, views about the incident remain divided, with each side blaming the other. The former president claimed it was a conspiracy by the government, and fully believed the election was rigged.
Trump’s mob wasn’t a peaceful protest, it was a violent assault, They were insurrectionists, not patriots. They were not there to uphold the Constitution, they were there to destroy the Constitution.
On the other hand, the 46th US President reiterated his opponent’s involvement. The democrats since then used this incident as an example of the threat to democracy under Trump’s leadership. The day became a traumatic memory for US citizens and a caution tale which De Niro reaffirmed in his speech against the alleged instigator.
