Ronnie Harrison has followed last year’s path back to the field in the NFL, and it happened even quicker in 2024.
Last season, the Indianapolis Colts cut Harrison at the end of the preseason, re-signed the former Alabama defensive back to their practice squad and had him on the field for their final seven games, including three starts.
This season, the Colts released Harrison on Aug. 25 as they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit. On Wednesday, Indianapolis signed Harrison for its practice squad.
On Saturday, the Colts announced they had elevated Harrison from the practice squad to active status for their Week 2 game, making him eligible to play when Indianapolis meets the Green Bay Packers at noon CDT Sunday at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Each NFL team can elevate two practice-squad members to active status for each game. After the game, elevated players revert to the practice squad.
Harrison entered the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018 as a third-round draft choice from Alabama’s 2017 CFP national-championship team.
After he started 22 games at strong safety in two seasons with Jacksonville, Harrison went to the Cleveland Browns in a Sept. 3, 2020, trade. Harrison played in 39 games, with 22 starts, for Cleveland before joining Indianapolis after training camp started last year.
Harrison began his time with the Colts at weakside linebacker before finishing the season with two games at safety. Harrison had two interceptions for Indianapolis in 2023, pushing his career total to seven.
In 74 NFL regular-season games, with 48 starts, Harrison also has 243 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, seven interceptions and two fumble recoveries while on the field for 2,563 defensive snaps and 486 special-teams plays. He also has played in two postseason games.
