Salem roads begin to reopen after building collapse

SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) — The City of Salem Fire Department announced State Street is now open after a brief closure due to a building collapse.

There was a disruption to the normal flow of business and traffic in Salem after an abandoned business building collapsed on Sunday.

Despite encountering some delays in demolition to clear the debris and make the area safe for drivers and pedestrians, the fire department announced State Street has reopened.

The project was anticipated to be completed Monday, but progress was slowed in order to ensure the safety of adjacent buildings.

As of a Wednesday update, a stretch of Broadway Avenue near the collapse is still closed to drivers and pedestrians, but the nearby gym has already reopened.

The building was initially set to be demolished this week, according to Salem Fire Chief Scott Mason.

The building has been vacant for more than a decade, and no one was hurt in the collapse.
