BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — ‘Tis the season for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. From now until the end of the holidays, you’ll hear the familiar bell ringing and see the volunteers with their kettles.
Salvation Army of Mahoning County kicked off the season at the Southern Park Mall on Saturday. Its goal is to raise $100,000 to support year-round efforts such as community meals, which have fed over 40,000 people for free.
“Such a tremendous community. Mahoning Valley never disappoints. Always steps up when we need the help,” said Sherrylyn Moore with Salvation Army. “Last year, we began to be short on toys, and some of the money we had gotten in — we were reminded, ‘Oh, we can go out and purchase what we need.'”
Several businesses and foundations presented the organization with checks at the event. Soak & Sons originally pledged $10,000 but added an additional $5,000. Sam and Donna Boak are challenging other businesses to give as well.
“Please look into it. See what your business can do or personally and give back and support what we’re about here in Youngstown,” Sam said.
“If they have a spare moment, and they want to purchase a toy or just throw a couple of dollars more in the kettle, it’s greatly appreciated,” Donna said.
Along with the Red Kettle Campaign, The Army of Toys Campaign has begun. The goal is to collect 16,000 toys. Haus Auto Group is lending a truck that will serve as a drop-off location inside the mall.
“You can drop off toys in the trunk, or you can just scan this QR code. It’ll take you to the Salvation Army website, and you can donate straight from there,” said Gavin Haus.
You can find ways to sign up for Christmas assistance, volunteer opportunities or donations on the Salvation Army of Mahoning County’s website. The organization’s Facebook lists local toy drop-off locations.
