A 26-year-old San Juan man on Thursday pleaded guilty to buying two grenade-style destructive devices for protection during his drug trafficking activities.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas announced in a news release that Jamez Aaron Sandoval, who was arrested Aug. 1, was convicted.

After his arrest, investigators searched his residence and found cocaine, marijuana, drug dealing paraphernalia and a firearm, according to the release.

“Further investigation revealed Sandoval used the firearm for protection during the commission of drug trafficking activities,” the release stated.

Sandoval, who does not have a plea agreement, is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 3 where he faces up to a decade in federal prison and a potential maximum fine of $250,000.
