From the best hotels and airlines to the top cruises and destinations, the gongs are the longest-running and most prestigious recognition of excellence in the travel industry.

And in the UK‘s friendliest cities ranking, Glasgow took top spot.

According to Condé Nast, the United Kingdom has a reputation for its good manners with overseas and staycationers alike being won over by the charm of locals up and down the country.

For the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards, the travel experts asked readers to point out the places on our home turf where you can expect a warm reception.

Scotland‘s biggest city Glasgow scored an impressive 97.14 out of 100. With its colourful and approachable locals to its bustling array of bars and cultural hotspots, it’s understandable why it;s hit the top of the charts.

The luxury travel mag says: “After a brief stint in fourth position last year, Glasgow reclaims its title as the UK’s friendliest city for 2024.

“The people here have an irresistible charm, not to mention enthusiastic imagination.

“While Edinburgh usually takes the spotlight, Glasgow is equally – if not more – talented in the arts.

“As the UK’s first UNESCO City of Music and Scottish base for institutions like ballet and theatre, this humble port city pulses with the energy of creatives and audiences alike.”

The experts also suggest a top spot to stay in the city is the new House of Gods, which ‘oozes with an extravagance like no other hotel in Glasgow’.

‘It’s a dark paradise,’ inside the hotel that treats you like a star with personal butlers and a button for prosecco

Sarah Allard, Digital Director at Condé Nast Traveller, said: “For anyone who has ever visited Scotland it should come as no surprise that it continues to rank highly as one of our readers’ top destinations and for those that haven’t, well, consider it high on their bucket list for 2025.

“From checking out some of the best hotels in the UK to mixing with the locals in Glasgow – voted this year’s friendliest city in the UK – it’s impossible to have a bad time in Scotland.”

The UK capital London takes second place this time round, with a score of 93 with the mag saying Londoners are some of the ‘most considerate people around’.

Meanwhile, Scotland‘s capital Edinburgh is number three on the list with a rating of 91.11.

Earning a bronze medal for the second year in the row, Edinburgh consistently impresses readers with its hospitality.

Conde Nast Traveller says: “The Scottish capital draws thousands of visitors each year for its iconic Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s largest performance arts festival and crown jewel in the city’s creative repertoire.

“There’s also a plethora of distinguished restaurants, artisan bakeries and chic bars, all brought to life by the warm spirit of their owners.”

And the travel pros recommend 100 Princes Street, described as ‘a plush newcomer on the Edinburgh hotel scene’.

Oxford takes fourth place while York is in an number five.
