Scottish Premiership club start search for new assistant manager after ‘No. 2 agrees to join Premier League side’

DIARMUID O’CARROLL is on the brink of leaving St Mirren.

The Saints assistant manager was absent from yesterday’s 2-1 win over Hearts and Stephen Robinson confirmed after the game that his No.2 is on his way out of the club.

The St Mirren gaffer refused to go into any details at the time but did reveal O’Carroll is being eyed for an Under-21s team role.

And it looks like he’ll be heading down south as Newcastle United are reportedly the team in for him.

That’s according to the Daily Record – who claim the Magpies have agreed a compensation package with the Paisley outfit to bring the assistant to the Premier League.

O’Carroll, 37, began working with Robinson at Motherwell before joining him in England with Morecambe.

He then headed back to Scotland with his fellow countryman when Robinson agreed to take over at St Mirren in 2022.

But now he looks set to part ways with 49-year-old and will link with another Saints gaffer instead.

Jack Ross is already head of of coach development at Newcastle and O’Carroll will work closely with him as their new reserve/under-21 team boss.

It is a huge blow to the Buddies as O’Carroll has been a major part of the club’s backroom team since he joined Robinson in Paisley two years ago.

The manager is now looking for a new assistant and it’s believed he could promote within.

Brian Kerr is one man who could fill the void following his impressive work with the St Mirren under-age groups.

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Hearts, Robinson said: “Diarmuid wasn’t here but Brian’s come in and done great for me.

“Him and Jamie [Langfield, goalkeeping coach] were a big part of the set-plays. Credit to both of them. They’ve worked on the set-plays all week.

“We’ll make an official announcement over the weekend or Monday. I don’t want to jump the gun because I’m not 100 per cent sure. He is speaking to someone else [about] an Under-21 position.

“We’ve shown that we’ve got that staff in place to step up if that should happen. But I think it’s a matter that we deal with on Monday morning when we get the full facts.”
