COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) — A bill is heading to Governor Mike DeWine’s desk that would change the name of some bridges and roads in the Valley.
State Senator Sandra Obrien, R-Ashtabula, announced Wednesday that House Bill 81 passed the Senate.
The bill honors fallen military, first responders and elected officials. It includes legislation that would name some roads and bridges (in addition to their current names), including the following:
Mahoning County
- State Route 170 in New Middletown shall be known as Police Chief Ronnie Ricketts, Sr. Memorial Highway
- The southbound lane of State Route 46, between Youngstown Drive and State Route 446 shall be known as Dispatcher T.J. D’Apolito Memorial Highway
- The northbound lanes of State Route 11 between I-76 and State Route 62 shall be known as Army Lt. Col. Robert R. Melmick Memorial Highway
Trumbull County
- Route 422 between Warren Burton Road and State Route 534 shall be known as Chief Radio Operator Walter Dawson Memorial Highway
- The bridge spanning the Mahoning River on State Route 534 in Newton Falls shall be known as Veterans Memorial Bridge.
- The bridge spanning Mud Run between Mock Street and East Park Avenue shall be known as Hubbard First Responders Bridge
- The bridge over State Route 11 in Vienna shall be known as Vienna Township Veterans Bridge
- The bridge over Walnut Creek in Corltand shall be known as Cortland Veterans Memorial Bridge
“We all owe our veterans and first responders a debt of gratitude for their service to our nation, and these designations will allow us to honor them for generations to come,” O’Brien said. “I am thankful the bills I have worked on were included so we can recognize these heroes in our communities.”
