Seven people shot in multiple incidents in New Haven area

Seven people were shot over the weekend during multiple incidents in Hamden and New Haven, including some that officials believe may have been acts of retaliation.

The first incident was reported in Hamden on Friday as a memorial gathering was ending on Whitney Avenue just before midnight, according to the Hamden Police Department.

Officers found shell casings and blood before securing the area as a crime scene, police said.

Investigators later found that gunshots rang out as the memorial service was concluding and that a passing motorist was struck by gunfire. The victim was transported to an area hospital.

Police said two other people who were attending the memorial took themselves to the hospital and were treated for gunshot wounds.

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

According to police, a second vehicle was struck by gunfire but no one was injured.

Hours later in New Haven, officers responded to the area of 200 Temple St. at 2:40 a.m. on the report of a drive-by shooting that injured a man, the New Haven Police Department said. Responding officers located a 32-year-old man whose leg had been grazed by a bullet, police said.

The man was taken in a private vehicle to an area hospital.

Investigators located ballistic evidence at the scene and interviewed multiple “people involved,” according to police.

Police responded to another shooting shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday in the area of Ferry Street and Chatham Street. The victim of that shooting suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

On Sunday at 1:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of Shelton Avenue and Ivy Street upon receiving a ShotSpotter alert, police said. There were initially reports of three gunshot victims before investigators determined that two 20-year-old men had been shot.

Both victims were taken in private vehicles to area hospitals, including Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale’s Saint Raphael Campus. Police said they were initially listed in critical condition before being upgraded to stable condition.

According to police, one of the victims is a New Haven man and the other is a resident of Hamden.

Police secured a large crime scene and found ballistic evidence. Detectives responded to the area to conduct interviews.

According to New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, some of the shootings are believed to be retaliatory acts.

No arrests were immediately made in any of the incidents, which remain under investigation.
