Shogun’s Emmy-winning Star Néstor Carbonell Has Already Starred In These Iconic Christopher Nolan Films, But That’s Only the Tip of the Iceberg That’s His Career

The FX series Shogun had a dream run at the Emmys this year. Earning a whopping 25 collective nominations in the Creative and Primetime categories, the historical drama series won fourteen Creative Emmy Awards earlier this week. Actor Néstor Carbonell won the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Carbonell has been in the industry for over three decades and has featured in many acclaimed films and shows. The actor is best known for his roles in Lost, The Morning Show, and Bates Motel. He has also played Mayor Anthony Garcia in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and reprised his role in The Dark Knight Rises.

With a terrific fourteen wins, Shogun has become one of the most acclaimed shows of the past year as it went up against seasoned shows like The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. The historic drama series won the most awards, including casting, costumes, cinematography, picture editing, and more.

Actor Néstor Carbonell won the award for Outstanding Guest Actor for his role as Vasco Rodrigues in the show. It was his first Emmy nomination and win despite being in the industry for over three decades and having given memorable performances in shows like Lost, which earned him nominations at the Golden Derby and ALMA awards.

Campbell spoke to Deadline about his win and how grateful he felt about the victory. He said,

This is overwhelming. When you work as an actor as long as I have, the role is a gift. Some years are good, some years you try to piece them together. You count your blessings when you are working.

The actor also mentioned that the win was extremely meaningful as his first professional role was on the show Law & Order and he was on his way to finish directing an episode for the same show.

Néstor Carbonell has been in the industry for over thirty years. The actor started out, as he mentioned, on Law & Order and has performed in a variety of roles on TV and film. He has been a voice actor and has lent his voice to Justice League Unlimited and has also had prominent roles in Lost, Bates Motel, and recently in The Morning Show.

Perhaps his most famous role is that of Mayor Anthony Garcia in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and its sequel The Dark Knight Rises. While he becomes the primary target of the Joker in the second film, he lives to only be blown up at the football game by Bane in the final film. Carbonell told Kristian Harloff about how he got to be in the film,

I had done a movie called Smokin’ Aces. It hadn’t been released but it was an interesting character that I had never played before…While I was doing Lost I had this audition come in and it was for Chris Nolan’s movie…The next morning I was there reading for Chris and Emma…And then I didn’t hear anything.

The actor reportedly figured they had gone with someone else when three months later his manager called him while he shooting in Hawaii that Nolan’s team wanted to see him on tape. Carbonell then reportedly coordinated with Universal Pictures who produced Smokin’ Aces to send a scene from the film to Nolan, which eventually got him the job.

Shogun is currently available to stream on Hulu. The Dark Knight trilogy is available to watch on Max.
