Strong second half fuels YSU in Axe 'Em Classic opener

NACOGDOCHES, TX. (WKBN) – Youngstown State men’s basketball overcame a double-digit deficit to beat Monmouth 72-62 in the opening game of the Axe ‘Em Classic hosted by Stephen F. Austin.

The Penguins trailed 42-31 in the second half before putting together a 12-0 run to erase the deficit and then followed it up with another 16-7 run as YSU built up a 10-point lead.

YSU guard Nico Galette earned his first double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. EJ Farmer also scored 16 points while grabbing 7 rebounds during the win.

Two other Guins finished in double figures scoring with Ty Harper registering 12 points and Cris Carroll notching 10 points and 7 rebounds coming off the bench.

For Monmouth, Jaret Valencia led all scorers with 18 points as the Hawks fall to 0-6 on the year.

With the win, YSU improves to 2-2 overall and will next take on Presbyterian on Friday, Nov. 22 with a 3:30 p.m. tipoff in the Axe ‘Em Classic.

They will play a third and final game in Nacogdoches against the host Lumberjacks on Saturday to wrap up the round robin multi-team event.
