‘Sweet, loving’ Birmingham girl killed in crash; grandmother searching for Good Samaritan who helped

The family of a Birmingham girl killed in a weekend crash is mourning her loss and searching for a Good Samaritan who stopped to help.

Tia Williams, 10, was killed Saturday when the vehicle she was riding in with her mother, brother and God brother when one vehicle struck them from behind, and then a second.

“The impact killed my granddaughter,’’ said grandmother, Veronica Thomas.

The multi-vehicle crash that killed Tia happened at 1:10 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 59 southbound near Oporto Madrid Boulevard. Additional details about the crash were not released.

Tia was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:06 p.m.

Her 3-year-old Godbrother remains in critical condition under heavy sedation.

Her mother and 16-year-old brother have been released from the hospital.

Tia was a fifth grader at WJ Christian School in Birmingham. A counseling team was at the school on Monday.

Thomas described Tia as sweet and loving. She loved to dance.

“She was a beautiful person,’’ Thomas said.

“She loved school,’’ the grieving grandmother said. “She had a best friend, and they did TikTok and talked on the phone.”

Several passersby stopped to help the family including a woman with whom the family has been able to talk with.

They are still searching for a man who stopped because they want to personally thank him.

“He was the one who tried to get my granddaughter out of the car. He helped my family,’’ Thomas said. “He told me his name and with so much going on, I just forgot.”

He also helped her injured 16-year-old grandson.

“That man comforted him, and I don’t know if it was the shirt of his back or what, but he gave him something so he wouldn’t get cut up in the grass,’’ she said.

Thomas aid her daughter is not only grief-stricken but in pain. “She’s not doing well,’’ she said.

Her grandson, though injured, “Is being strong for his mama and me.”

“It hurts,’’ she said.

Thomas said the man’s name began with the letter “M.’ She would like the Good Samaritan to contact her at 205-382-1606 so she can thank him personally.
