Sydney Sweeney Couldn’t Believe ‘Eden’ is Based on a True Story But Ana de Armas Had a Different Reaction

Ever since HBO’s 2019 show, Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney has proven she has what it takes to be one of Hollywood’s finest stars. In fact, in just the last year, the 27-year-old had a slew of back-to-back projects lined up for herself. However, none of them were in the same genre. From romantic comedies to horror and even a superhero film, she did it all. But now, her survival thriller, Eden, which debuted at the TIFF has been making waves.

While the Ron Howard film had been based on a true story, it wasn’t until after reading the script that she and her co-star Ana de Armas realized it was all real.

Just last year, it was announced that Ron Howard’s Eden would be brought to life. With Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas, Daniel Brühl, Jude Law, and even Vanessa Kirby cast in the film, fans were excited to see how the true story from the Galápagos islands would be depicted on the big screen. Shortly after the survival thriller premiered at this year’s TIFF, the co-stars sat down with The Wrap to discuss the origins of the unhinged thriller.

You read all these crazy characters, there’s no way that they all are real, and they all come together and they have all these experiences.

Sweeney continued, “it’s the most wild account of people just put together.” She even claimed, “It’s the most fascinating look at humans and mankind.” However, her co-star, Armas had a different opinion. The 36-year-old stated, “I mean, it does feel real. I did it myself. I went from a place where I felt like it didn’t work for me anymore. And I found my little piece of Eden, my heaven, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Although both Sweeney and Armas were thrown by the reality behind their latest films, there is no doubt that it gave them some fresh perspectives. In fact, it even pushed the Deep Water star to go out of her comfort zone.

Ana de Armas airs her reservations about Eden

After being cast in Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden, Sydney Sweeney and Ana De Armas faced their own demons, on and off set. For the younger actress, doubt crept into her mind when she had to work with stars like Jude Law and David Brühl. After all, she had watched them on the big screen growing up and even felt like an imposter on the set.

For the 36-year-old, her fear was the sudden switch in genres and her character, the Baroness, who was in a threesome. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actress revealed that it was the truth behind the story that drew her to it.

I got a little scared, and I told [Ron] I was nervous because it was really out there.

Armas continued, “There was no question I wanted to do it. I wanted the challenge.” She even ended up shining a light on her character and stated, “Having this crazy threesome relationship and being a woman of opposites—either she’s sweet and tender and fragile and nervous and scared, or she’s absolutely crazy and dangerous. It was kind of finding that limit: What was the craziest I could get? How far could I go?”

Although Armas had her doubts, the actress found a way to work around them and surprise herself. In fact, she even pleasantly surprised the director, Howard, who deemed the star a “risk-taker.” The stars of the film may have loved their work. However, fans have had a rather mixed reaction to the thriller since its premiere.
