Teen shot and killed in New Haven; school bus hit by bullet

A 16-year-old male was shot an killed in New Haven Friday afternoon, police said.

The teen was found just after 2:30 p.m. in the area of Goffe Street near Hudson Street when officers went to the area after receiving a ShotSpotter activation and 911 calls about a shooting, police said. The teen was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital by ambulance, but succumbed to his injuries, police said. The victim was not identified by police.

Police said that as officers canvassed for suspects, a second 16-year-old was detained on Hudson Street allegedly in possession of a “ghost gun” with an extended magazine. However, police said, it does not appear that juvenile was responsible for the shooting.

“Officers also learned that a passing school bus with children on it was struck by a stray bullet,” police said. “The bus driver acted quickly and stopped several blocks away from the scene; no children on the bus were injured and members of Yale Child Study were dispatched to assist with them.”

New Haven police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have information valuable to investigators call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
