Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon created Mayor of Kingstown is three seasons in, with Jeremy Renner leading it from the front. The show has gotten a lot of positive responses from viewers as well as critics, with people praising the show for its writing and performance. Season three finished airing in early August, but fans are still not able to stop talking about it.
From the very first episode to the latest, the show has had a lot of moments that had fans shocked or upset. With life and death and incarceration in between, the show has a lot of intense moments, and it’s difficult not to get sucked into the story. So when something really devastating happens, it’s not easy for fans to forget.
One Death In Mayor of Kingstown That Fans Are Still Reeling From
Mayor of Kingstown is a story about a fictional town where incarceration is the main business; with the Russian mafia trying to infiltrate the city and its people with dr*gs, g*ns, and s*x tr*fficking. Jeremy Renner’s Mike McLusky, who reluctantly had to become the leader of his family after the death if his older brother, three seasons into the show is getting to a place where he is somewhat comfortable with his line of work, something that he never wanted.
But what you want and what life gives you are not always the same thing. And that realization came to a head-on when one of the most important characters from the show met their end in a manner no one wanted to see them in. The character of Iris, played by Emma Laird, in a shocking turn of events, is found dead of an overdose, after all the hardships her character went through to get her life back.
Hugh Dillon Wants Mayor of Kingstown to be As Authentic As Possible
Hugh Dillon recently spoke of how Iris’ death was a necessary evil to keep the show as real and authentic as possible. Happy endings are for movies, reality is bitter. That’s what Iris’ death reminded us of, when the bus conductor found her cold and lifeless at the back of the bus. After all the trouble the character faced from the mafia, killing Konstantin, getting betrayed, and then finally a chance to get free, none of it mattered in the end. She was right back to where it all started, but worse.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Dillon said:
She didn’t take her life; it was an accidental overdose. You know, that’s part of the authenticity of the show and where I grew up. I had struggled with heroin early on in my life, and I’ve had a lot of friends who passed away from [that]; opioid addiction is a real thing. What Taylor [Sheridan] has taught me is to talk about what you know, and don’t pull any punches. And that’s what we did. Life is brutal and unfair, and we wanted to tell real stories. And we wanted to have an impact. And that is as real as it gets.
He definitely got that right! The show, of course, had elements that were somewhat beyond everyday reality. But the writers have tried their very best to showcase things to be as close to it as possible. And all that only makes the show more intense.
