During a recent interview, Reeves spoke about the uncertainty over cinematographer Greig Fraser’s availability. Therefore, fans want Reeves to wait longer to ensure Fraser is back for the sequel, and here is what they had to say on social media.

The Batman directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson became a major critical and commercial success. It will be followed up by The Penguin spin-off and a direct sequel to the 2022 film. While promoting the spin-off series, Matt Reeves discussed cinematographer Greig Fraser‘s involvement in the upcoming sequel.

I don’t know yet. I certainly hope that the timing will work out for that, but I actually don’t know.

Reeves told Collider, expressing doubts over Fraser’s return for the sequel, presumably because of scheduling conflicts. Although a sequel was announced in 2022, it isn’t expected to start filming until 2025, which would certainly raise doubts over Fraser’s availability.

Fans reacted to Reeves’ comments on social media, expressing a desire for the director to push production further if required but ensure that Fraser could return. Here is what fans had to say about Fraser’s potential absence from The Batman 2 on X.

As the tweets suggest, fans consider Fraser’s work to be a crucial part of the first installment’s success. Therefore, they do not want the sequel to proceed without his involvement. Despite the seemingly pessimistic response from Reeves, fans are hopeful that Fraser will be able to return for the sequel even if it means the second installment arrives later than expected.

Legendary Cinematographer Roger Deakins Felt Greig Fraser Deserved an Oscar for The Batman

Aside from the fans lauding Greig Fraser’s work on The Batman, he received the highest praise possibly from fellow cinematographer Roger Deakins. The latter has worked on several critically acclaimed and popular films, including Blade Runner 2049 and 1917 for which he won the Oscar for Best Cinematography.

During an interview with Deadline, Deakins lamented Greig’s work being ignored by the Academy as The Batman wasn’t nominated at the prestigious ceremony for Best Cinematography. Deakins stated:

The best cinematography hasn’t been nominated. It’s The Batman. That’s the best work in my view.

From Deakins’ comment, it is clear that the legendary cinematographer felt that The Batman was the best work in the category and it was a shame that it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.

Moreover, Deakins himself received thirteen nominations in the category before he was finally conferred with the award on his fourteenth nomination. Hence, Deakins’ comments about the Academy ignoring popular movies and snubbing them are understandable and it makes the legend’s praise for Fraser more noteworthy.

The Batman is streaming on Max and The Batman – Part II is scheduled to release on October 2, 2026.
