Following the success of The Batman, fans have eagerly awaited updates on the sequel, and after The Penguin premiered, Matt Reeves dropped a bombshell: According to Reeves’ interview on Entertainment Weekly, The Batman 2 has an official release date of October 2, 2026, with production set to begin in 2025. While Reeves has kept much of the sequel’s plot under wraps, one thing is clear, the series will play a significant role in setting the stage for Bruce Wayne’s next battle.

I always wanted to make sure that each of the movies we did with Rob [Pattinson], the central arc, the emotional arc of the story would be Batman and Bruce’s.

That’s not to say that there would never be an appearance by Batman or Bruce or something like that [on a future series], Lauren and I did speak: Do we want to find a way to get Rob to somehow be in this show? But that was an afterthought.

Reeves also shared that The Batman 2 will take a time jump, picking up after the events of both The Penguin and the first film. Colin Farrell’s Penguin, who is expected to further establish himself as a key player in Gotham’s underworld throughout his standalone series, will reappear in the sequel as a central antagonist.

Matt Reeves Expands His Batman Epic Crime Saga with The Penguin

As The Penguin launched its first episode, Matt Reeves’ vision for the Batman Epic Crime Saga started coming to life in vivid detail. The series, premiering on HBO, picks up just one week after the events of The Batman, positioning Oswald Cobb (aka the Penguin) in the midst of a Gotham City reeling from chaos.

What makes The Penguin such a critical piece in the puzzle of Reeves’ Batman universe is its direct connection to The Batman 2. The eight-episode series bridges the storylines between the two films, fleshing out the backstory of Gotham’s criminal underworld, which will play a pivotal role in the upcoming sequel. Matt Reeves revealed in a recent interview that Farrell’s Oz is poised to make a major return in The Batman 2, further intertwining the series with the films.

The decision to focus on Penguin as a central figure in the crime saga illustrates Reeves’ commitment to developing Gotham’s world as a layered, interconnected narrative. While Oz may be the center of the show, his character is just one piece of the sprawling chessboard that Reeves is setting up, with The Batman 2 expected to draw upon the power shifts and criminal alliances forged in this new series.

You can watch The Penguin on HBO MAX.
