Could you resist a Misfit Club?
A new pub, called The Misfit Club, is planning to open in the Factory Square building in downtown Mystic.
The Groton Planning and Zoning Commission this week approved a special permit to convert a former small brewery space in the mixed-use building on Water Street into a small bar.
The pub will be open year round and serve as a gathering spot for the community, as outlined during a presentation and application from business owners Timothy Koehler and George Majewski.
“As residents of Mystic, we observed that there was an interest in creating a place that was different from the others where the rich tapestry of craft beer comes to life,” Majewski told the commission on Tuesday.
The pub plans to sell craft beer, as well as a small selection of craft wine and craft cider.
The pub was designed to complement and enhance Mystic’s historic downtown area and preserves the space’s historic façade and architecture, according to the presentation.
The space was occupied for seven years by Barley Head Brewery, which Koehler and Majewski bought, according to the application.
The Historic District Commission has approved signs for the pub that are made by sign maker Cam Bortz of Mystic Carved Signs, who has designed many business signs on Water and Main Streets, according to the application.
The business will not have an outdoor patio, and there will be noise-canceling and fire resistant insulation and ceiling soundproofing acoustic tiles, according to the presentation.
Interior décor and furnishings are designed to reflect Mystic’s colonial heritage, according to the presentation. The pub will feature soft lighting, comfortable bench seating and USB ports throughout to create a space where people want to hang out.
“We are committed to being active members of the Mystic community and are already working closely with the Chamber of Commerce and others to give back by offering a comfortable space for everyone,” Majewski said.
The planned hours for the 1,883-square-foot establishment, including about 700 square feet of customer space, are 3 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 to 1 a.m. Friday through Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Seven parking spots are being leased for the business in the Mystic Museum of Art parking lot.
The Misfit Club will be located just down the street from Bank & Bridge Brewing on West Main Street.
Another bar, Dangerbar, which the commission approved plans for in August, is expected to open next month in the Factory Square building.
